PoroCity is a project that seeks to reorganize an extremely high density environment into an integrated 3D city while addressing sustainability issues. The designated site for this proposal is Dharavi, Mumbai, India; one of the largest slums in the world and one of the most controversial sites of the new millennium. It is balanced for being one of the largest regeneration schemes of the present times and has attracted investments from some of the world’s largest real estate companies and the advancement of global architecture and planning firms. Spread over 216 hectares, the site is triangular in plan, and has a residential population of 376,000. In addition to the residential population, the district has approximately 5,000 businesses and 1,500 single room industries..
A large number of these businesses are hybrid homes where residents live and work in the same area. There is also a shortage of public amenities, including schools, hospitals, and parks. PoroCity is an urban proposal that addresses the physical and economic issues of the area while maintaining hybrid homes and strong communal ties. It is derived from the progressive subdivision of the rectangular Sierpen Pyramid, giving a range of volumes and voids to include a variety of programs. The smallest self divisible unit of the Sierpen Pyramid is pixilated at 3m x 9m blocks, divided into collective housing units with northern facing terraces. This is to avoid harsh tropical sunlight, allowing the terraces to be used during the daytime. Large intermediate volumes can be used as community sites. As the scale of the units increases, they are used for small-scale infrastructure such as clinics and supermarkets, while large units are conceived as educational institutions, factories, and offices.PoroCity is a car-free environment where a means of vertical, horizontal and diagonal access via elevators. moving walks, escalators, and funiculars. The open ended nature of the system allows for the different volumes to be incorporated — in and to accommodate for growth and changes in density.
